Volume 1 is the product of a personal enquiry by the author into three simple, profound and recurring questions which we all encounter: Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going? The end result is a road map through especially the last 400 to 500 years of socio-cultural history in South Africa with special emphasis on how the South African people who were called 'coloured' came into being - so named by the white colonial and apartheid system which ruled and dominated South Africa for almost 400 years.
Volume 1 is made up of three distinct thematic sections - (1) Ownership to Alienation, (2) Collateral Damage and Disintegration, and (3) Rebuilding a New Future.
Section One, Ownership to Alienation, comprises 10 chapters which set the stage and context in which to grapple with coloured identity and heritage through the lenses of colonial strategy as implemented by the respective colonial empires for the past 400 to 500 years of South African history.
Section Two, Collateral Damage and Disintegration, comprises eight chapters which track and trace the demise and growing invisibility of coloured people at various levels of society.
Topics addressed here include gangsterism, business and a debate about whether there are too many coloureds in Cape Town and should rather be spread out across the country in terms of employment equity.
Section Three, Rebuilding a new future, comprises seven chapters which are deliberately restorative in focus.
They are also intensely personal and, therefore, auto-ethnographic in orientation.
The section is forward-looking with reference to nation-building and claiming the future rather than remaining stuck in the past.
