Jude the Obscure is Thomas Hardy's final novel, which follows the story of Jude - a young man who aspires to intellectual achievement beyond his profession of stonemason.

Aspiring to scholarly heights, from childhood Jude reads and teaches himself Greek and Latin, and shows aptitude in assimilating such knowledge.

However during his teenage years he meets Arabella, who manipulates him into marriage by claiming pregnancy.

Although the pair separate without divorcing, Jude is further distracted from his aspirations by his flamboyant young cousin Sue Bridehead, with whom he falls in love.

Although eventually forming a union with Sue, Jude finds difficulty in reconciling his Christian beliefs with the non-adherence of his cousin.

These differences further hinder Jude's aim of eventually rising above his working class origins and escaping economic oppression, as social stigma against he and Sue living together unmarried acts as an additional oppression.

Published in 1895, Jude the Obscure struck a chord with the reading public for its intense characterisation and narrative.

It was one of the earliest works of fiction to criticise the institution of marriage, juxtaposing the religious origins behind matrimony and the public's then-condemnatory attitude to long term couples who remain unmarried.

Throughout the lengthy narrative, it also paints a stark portrait of the rigid class structure and social conventions of the Victorian era, and their stymieing of individuals who may otherwise be of great promise.

On the last day of summer, some years ago, a young college graduate moves to Chicago and rents a small apartment on the north side of the city, by the vast and muscular lake.

This is the story of the five seasons he lives there, during which he meets gangsters, gamblers, policemen, a brave and garrulous bus driver, a cricket player, a librettist, his first girlfriend, a shy apartment manager, and many other riveting souls, not to mention a wise and personable dog of indeterminate breed.

A love letter to Chicago, the Great American City, and a wry account of a young man's coming-of-age during the one summer in White Sox history when they had the best outfield in baseball, Brian Doyle's Chicago is a novel that will plunge you into a city you will never forget, and may well wish to visit for the rest of your days.
