Exchange Rate Economics

'In summary, the book is valuable as a textbook both at the advanced undergraduate level and at the graduate level.

It is also very useful for the economist who wants to be brought up-to-date on theoretical and empirical research on exchange rate behaviour.' "Journal of International Economics"

Fundamental Mathematical Analysis

Author : Robert Magnus
Published by Springer NaturePublished since 2020-07-14

This textbook offers a comprehensive undergraduate course in real analysis in one variable.

Taking the view that analysis can only be properly appreciated as a rigorous theory, the book recognises the difficulties that students experience when encountering this theory for the first time, carefully addressing them throughout.

Historically, it was the precise description of real numbers and the correct definition of limit that placed analysis on a solid foundation.

The book therefore begins with these crucial ideas and the fundamental notion of sequence.

Infinite series are then introduced, followed by the key concept of continuity.

These lay the groundwork for differential and integral calculus, which are carefully covered in the following chapters.

Pointers for further study are included throughout the book, and for the more adventurous there is a selection of "nuggets", exciting topics not commonly discussed at this level.

Examples of nuggets include Newton's method, the irrationality of π, Bernoulli numbers, and the Gamma function.

Based on decades of teaching experience, this book is written with the undergraduate student in mind.

A large number of exercises, many with hints, provide the practice necessary for learning, while the included "nuggets" provide opportunities to deepen understanding and broaden horizons.

Machine Learning for Asset Managers

Author : Marcos M. López de Prado
Published by Cambridge University PressPublished since 2020-04-22

Successful investment strategies are specific implementations of general theories.

An investment strategy that lacks a theoretical justification is likely to be false.

Hence, an asset manager should concentrate her efforts on developing a theory rather than on backtesting potential trading rules.

The purpose of this Element is to introduce machine learning (ML) tools that can help asset managers discover economic and financial theories.

ML is not a black box, and it does not necessarily overfit.

ML tools complement rather than replace the classical statistical methods.

Some of ML's strengths include (1) a focus on out-of-sample predictability over variance adjudication; (2) the use of computational methods to avoid relying on (potentially unrealistic) assumptions; (3) the ability to "learn" complex specifications, including nonlinear, hierarchical, and noncontinuous interaction effects in a high-dimensional space; and (4) the ability to disentangle the variable search from the specification search, robust to multicollinearity and other substitution effects.
