The Minister's Wooing is a historical novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe, first published in 1859.

Set in 18th-century New England, the novel explores New England history, highlights the issue of slavery, and critiques the Calvinist theology in which Stowe was raised.[ Due to similarities in setting, comparisons are often drawn between this work and Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (1850).

However, in contrast to Hawthorne's The Scarlett Letter, The Minister's Wooing is a "sentimental romance"; its central plot revolves around courtship and marriage.

Moreover, Stowe's exploration of the regional history of New England deals primarily with the domestic sphere, the New England response to slavery, and the psychological impact of the Calvinist doctrines of predestination and disinterested benevolence. With its intense focus upon the history, customs, and mannerisms of New England, The Minister's Wooing is one sense an example of the local color writing that proliferated in late 19th century.

However, by highlighting the issue of slavery, this time in the north, The Minister's Wooing also represents a continuation of Stowe's earlier anti-slavery novels. Finally, the work serves as a critique of Calvinism, written from the perspective of an individual deeply familiar with the theological system.

Stowe's father was the well-known Calvinist minister Lyman Beecher, and Stowe based many aspects of the novel upon events in the lives of herself and her older sister Catharine's life.

Throughout the novel, Stowe portrays the reaction of different personality types to the pressures of Calvinist principles, illustrating in this manner what she perceives as Calvinism's strengths and weaknesses.

In particular, responding to the untimely death of her sister's fiancé and the death of two of her own children, Stowe addresses the issue of predestination, the idea that individuals were either saved or damned, and only the elect would go to heaven.

She came from the Beecher family, a famous religious family, and is best known for her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), which depicts the harsh conditions for enslaved African Americans.

The book reached millions as a novel and play, and became influential in the United States and Great Britain, energizing anti-slavery forces in the American North, while provoking widespread anger in the South.

Stowe wrote 30 books, including novels, three travel memoirs, and collections of articles and letters.

She was influential for both her writings and her public stances and debates on social issues of the day.

Life and workHarriet Elisabeth Beecher was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, on June 14, 1811.

She was the sixth of 11 children born to outspoken Calvinist preacher Lyman Beecher.

Author : Thomas Hardy
Published by Createspace Independent Publishing PlatformPublished since 2016-09-08

Jude the Obscure is Thomas Hardy's final novel, which follows the story of Jude - a young man who aspires to intellectual achievement beyond his profession of stonemason.

Aspiring to scholarly heights, from childhood Jude reads and teaches himself Greek and Latin, and shows aptitude in assimilating such knowledge.

However during his teenage years he meets Arabella, who manipulates him into marriage by claiming pregnancy.

Although the pair separate without divorcing, Jude is further distracted from his aspirations by his flamboyant young cousin Sue Bridehead, with whom he falls in love.

Although eventually forming a union with Sue, Jude finds difficulty in reconciling his Christian beliefs with the non-adherence of his cousin.

These differences further hinder Jude's aim of eventually rising above his working class origins and escaping economic oppression, as social stigma against he and Sue living together unmarried acts as an additional oppression.

Published in 1895, Jude the Obscure struck a chord with the reading public for its intense characterisation and narrative.

It was one of the earliest works of fiction to criticise the institution of marriage, juxtaposing the religious origins behind matrimony and the public's then-condemnatory attitude to long term couples who remain unmarried.

Throughout the lengthy narrative, it also paints a stark portrait of the rigid class structure and social conventions of the Victorian era, and their stymieing of individuals who may otherwise be of great promise.

This Shared Dream-Perpustakaan.org

Author : Kathleen Ann Goonan
Published by Tor Science FictionPublished since 2016-10-04

Kathleen Ann Goonan introduced Sam Dance and his wife, Bette, and their quest to alter our present reality for the better in her novel In War Times (winner of the John W.

Campbell Memorial Award for Best Novel and ALA's Best Science Fiction Novel of 2008).

Now, in This Shared Dream, she tells the story of the next generation.

The three Dance kids, seemingly abandoned by both parents when they were younger, are now adults and are all disturbed by memories of a reality that existed in place of their world.

The older girl, Jill, even remembers the disappearance of their mother while preventing the assassination of John F.

Kennedy.

Goonan has created a new kind of utopian SF novel, in which the changes in history have created a present world that is in many ways superior to our own, while in other worlds people strive to prevent their own erasure by restoring the ills to ours.

This Shared Dream is certainly the most provocative SF speculation of the year, and perhaps the decade.

At Forty-Eight, Tim Cranmer is a secret servant in premature retirement to deepest rural England.

His Cold War is fought and won, and he is free to devote himself to his stately manor house, his vineyard, and his beautiful young mistress, Emma.

But no man can escape his past, and Tim's lives twenty miles away, in the chaotic person of Larry Pettifer: bored radical don, philanderer, and for twenty years Tim's mercurial double agent against the now vanquished Communist threat.

Between the two stands an unresolved rivalry that dates all the way back to their shared boyhood at public school.

As the story opens, Larry and Emma have disappeared.

Have they run off together? Are they lovers? Has Larry lured Emma into some dark game she cannot understand? Setting off in pursuit of them, Tim discovers that he too is being pursued, by his former masters.

The hunter becomes the hunted.

Raiding his own past like a thief, he follows Larry and Emma into the minefield - physical and emotional - of their new allegiance.

And as Tim advances across the moral wastes of post-Cold War Europe - the battered landscape of England after Thatcher, the lawless worlds of Moscow and Southern Russia - his dilemma deepens.

Finding himself deprived of both past and future, a dispossessed loyalist, he must grapple with his own leftover humanity as the values he fought to preserve fall away, and the spectre of the reinvented Russian empire begins to haunt the ruins of the Soviet dream.

Our Game is John le Carre at his incomparable best.
